IRVING WELCOMES OUR LIBRARIAN, Ms. Mcardle!

"Everyone is welcome in our school library!

This semester we will be ordering many new books using very generous funding to refresh our aging collection of books.

If any student wishes to recommend a title they think we should have in our library please do stop by and let me know the title. If it is age appropriate I will make every effort to order the book to add to our collection.

Students can access digital books via SORA an app that they can find in their English class on Schoology. When you use SORA, just remember to always sign in with Los Angeles Unified School District as your school, and to ensure Los Angeles Public Library has been added as the local library. Books can be borrowed digitally for 20 days and will be automatically returned at the end of the loan period.

The district is currently working to make it easier to access the Los Angeles Public Library through Schoology by making student success numbers and pins available to students within their Schoology accounts. This will provide access to an even wider collection of books digitally. All students should be reading an independent reading book of their choice, at least two hours outside of their classes, in line with the expectations of all Humanities teachers.

The Reading Decathlon is open to anyone and students will set out to read 15 books from a diverse range of perspectives by May 1st. At the end of the reading all 15 books, students will compete in a Jeopardy-style competition against other middle schools. Congratulations to the dedicated team of readers last year who brought home first place in a  very close competition.

Students can get a list of the titles in the library and most of the titles are available on SORA digitally. I will have some print books available in the library for students who prefer to borrow a print book.

We have lots of new titles in the library and students can borrow two books for 21 days so please come and see what great new books we have for you to ensure you are reading a book of your choice at least two hours a week.

I look forward to seeing you in our school library on the second floor of the main building soon!

Ms. McArdle (Teacher Librarian)
