Teaching Philosophy

Hello, I am Mr. Vallin. Thanks for taking the time to check out my profile! I am a humanities teacher here at Irving, as well as an elective teacher for piano, where I teach students in the general education and special education settings. There is, in my view, no question that learning is best done in community. And I make my best efforts at preserving that in my classes so that all learners can perceive the beauty and joy of education.

Though I'm deeply invested in academia, my students have and always will come first in my professional life. In short, my work is all for them. I actively strive for igniting the flames of curiosity and wonder in their lives, and for those reasons, I regularly incorporate cutting-edge research--much of which includes the research that my team and I conducted at USC, as well as the research I conduct at University College London--into my lessons so that students get a unique opportunity to learn in a futuristic way. Results have been proven in my students' academic motivation and, more importantly, in their care and compassion for one another.

Feel free to reach out to me for any reason at all--my email appears below. God bless you and peace be with you.

Educational Background

My dad, an elementary school teacher, began showing me how to teach when I was in middle school and in those early years I fell in love with education, both as an aspiring teacher and as a student. I started college after I graduated from middle school, and received my A.A. degree with a major in music. Afterward I attended Biola University, a small Christian college in La Mirada, where I received a bachelor's degree in philosophy with a minor in biblical studies. I then went on to graduate school at USC where I received a master's degree in teaching along with my teaching credential. Currently, I am working on a PhD at University College London's Institute of Education. I also served as part of an educational psychology research team at USC's Rossier School of Education where we published research on agentic engagement!

Nintendo and Pokemon Club!

Made more obvious from my classroom decor in the background of my photo, I am the advisor of the Nintendo and Pokemon Club. The club is a significant part of Irving culture. It offers an exciting and comforting environment where students can come and enjoy playing with one another without fear of judgement, since we prioritize building harmony, deep friendship, and peace among one another in addition to sharpening our social and communication skills. We celebrate differences in every capacity. And no matter what your experiences are in life or with gaming, you are always welcome.
