Hello, I am Mr. Vallin. Thanks for taking the time to check out my profile! I am a humanities teacher here at Irving, as well as an elective teacher for piano, where I teach both students in the general education setting and students in the special education setting.

Additionally (made more obvious from my classroom decor in the background of my photo!) I am one of the advisors for the Super Smash Brothers and Pokemon Club. For those of you familiar with these games, I have nearly every Pokemon game that exists from Gen 3 onward and love to play on every Nintendo console. In Smash Bros., am a R.O.B. and Wolf main, and I also specialize in Link, Joker, Donkey Kong, and Mii Gunner--all of whom I currently have in Elite Smash. The club is an exciting and comforting environment where students can come and enjoy playing with one another without fear of judgement, since we prioritize building harmony, deep friendship, and peace among one another in addition to sharpening our social and communication skills. No matter what your experiences are with the game, you are always welcome. (I also offer Smash lessons to students who might want to improve on their skills, as long as their grades are up of course!)

Even more deep than my enjoyment of video games is my passion for education. My dad, an elementary school teacher, began showing me how to teach when I was in middle school and in those early years I fell in love with education, both as an aspiring teacher and as a student. I started college after I graduated from Middle School (let me know if you're interested in doing that too and I can help!), and received my A.A. degree with a major in music. Afterward I attended Biola University, a small Christian college in La Mirada, where I received a bachelor's degree in philosophy with a minor in theology. I then went on to graduate school at USC where I received a master's degree in teaching along with my teaching credential. I am also currently a graduate research assistant in educational psychology at USC's Rossier School of Education with some publishings on Agentic Engagement pending!

I actively strive for igniting the flames of curiosity and wonder in the lives of my students. For those reasons, I regularly incorporate cutting-edge research--the research that my team and I conduct at USC--into my lessons so that students get a unique opportunity to learn in a futuristic way. It has proven results in my students' academic motivation and, more importantly, in their care and compassion for one another.

There is, in my view, no question that education is best done in community. And I make my best efforts at preserving that in my classes so that all learners can perceive the beauty and joy of education. Feel free to reach out to me for any reason at all--my email appears below. God bless you and peace be with you.

Mr. Vallin
