L.A.C.E.R. Afterschool Programs

The LACER Afterschool Programs is a non-profit organization that provides free arts and literacy based after school activities to students throughout Los Angeles.  L.A.C.E.R. Afterschool Programs provides thousands of youth a safe and productive place to be after school.     

Founded in 1995, by Jackie Goldberg and Sharon Stricker, L.A.C.E.R. (Literacy, Arts, Culture, Education, and Recreation) began providing a model after school program in Hollywood, California.


Students select between a multitude of offerings in theater, music, dance, and the visual arts.  Taught by professional artists, the free classes are created to correlate with the core subjects of English, math, science, and social studies. In addition, LACER provides daily homework assistance, a comprehensive music program, recreation, and the innovative LACER Learning program.



Theater, Musical Theater, Dance, Jewelry Making, Mixed Media Art, Digital Photography, Sculpture, Survey of 20th Century Artists, Architecture, and Drawing are taught through this innovative after school arts opportunity.



Marching Band, Drumline, Colorguard, Drums, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Jazz Band, Rock Band, Singing, Violin and Piano/Keyboards are taught at each LACER program.



Homework Club/Brain Busters,

Tutoring, Math Busters, chess, computer/electronic arts labs, and literacy is built into each workshop taught at the programs.  Visit the LACER Learning website where students can access text books, quizzes and activities to engage and enhance their learning.



Basketball, Flag Football, Handball, Lacrosse and Soccer among others are offered seasonally and most often daily!  Competitions and Tournaments are also offered.



Each program takes field trips across the Los Angeles area such as: L.A. County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles Zoo, Science Center, Griffith Park, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) annual Whale Watching trips and summer camps.

Independent evaluations have confirmed that participation in L.A.C.E.R. dramatically impacts student learning and improves students’ attitudes toward themselves and education.

With the help of talented artists, instructors and mentors, L.A.C.E.R. is committed to providing a safe and creative environment where student leaders emerge.


This FREE Afterschool Program is open everyday after school until 6:00 p.m.  Attending students are provided with an afterschool snack.
